Origami Backpack — Adaptive Folding Design
Origami Backpack explores folding as both a structural and functional design strategy. Inspired by the folding logic of the Japanese Hercules beetle, the project translates biological movement into an adaptable structure that responds to the body and changes in volume.
Developed through a bottom-up research process, the design reduced the number of sewn components from approximately 170 in conventional backpacks to 67, while integrating concealed external access to the pockets and an adjustable internal capacity. Here, geometry is not simply visual—the folding system directly supports simpler production, security, adaptability, and everyday function.
